Canadian actress Rachel McAdams has portrayed a range of characters, from romantic roles to a mean smoking girl, over her illustrious two-decade career in the entertainment industry.
McAdams debuted the role of Ani Bezzerides, a chain smoker, in the anthology crime drama television series True Detective. Numerous scenes and images of the actress smoking on the show have sparked curiosity among fans, prompting them to wonder if she smokes in real life.
Despite portraying a chain-smoking character, the truth about the actress’ real-life smoking habits remains elusive. She has also not been spotted smoking in public or addressed her smoking habits publicly.

Conversely, in a revealing interview with Daily Mail, McAdams disclosed her unconventional approach to addressing insomnia: she turned to marijuana.
This unorthodox choice resulted in unexpected outcomes, with the actress experiencing hallucinations and hearing opera in her head as a consequence of using the substance.
McAdams stated that she found herself in an unusual predicament after seeking advice from her grocer to address her struggle with insomnia. Recounting the incident, she shared, “I went in recently, and we were chatting, and I told him I was having a hard time sleeping.”
To her surprise, the grocer presented a mysterious dark green substance in an unlabeled bottle, revealing it to be marijuana.
Despite her initial reluctance, driven by the desire to sleep rather than get high, McAdams, in her own words, confessed, “I take the tiniest little teaspoon, brush my teeth, by the time I’m getting into bed I’m like, my brain, what’s happening?”
This unconventional remedy led to unexpected consequences, as she experienced hallucinations and heard opera for a prolonged five-hour duration.
Apart from this particular instance, there is no publicly known situation where McAdams has tried cigarettes, marijuana, or any other substances. As of now, she might not be into those things, especially considering she is a responsible mother of two kids.

Despite her outgoing public persona, McAdams disclosed that she grappled with social anxiety. In an interview with YahooBe, the actress candidly admitted that attending events with large crowds triggers a desire in her to ‘stay home forever.
She also revealed that during her past work experiences, she used to feel discomfort when surrounded by many people. McAdams further explained that it was her anxiety that drew her to the role of Annie in Game Night.
Elaborating on her social anxiety, she expressed, “I can be socially anxious, and I find those people are the ones that are most reticent to play games. It gives you a goal and an activity, and you can bond with people in a really natural way without having to navigate your way through social politics as much.”
Alongside her social anxiety, the actress also grappled with mental health problems. These challenges prompted her to take a break from her career for a certain period.
In an interview with Bustle, McAdams candidly discussed her decision to step back from her career during a successful period. She expressed feelings of guilt for not capitalizing on the opportunities presented to her in the 2000s.
However, she also acknowledged that the prevailing pressure at the time didn’t align with her personality and mental well-being.
Prioritizing her mental health, McAdams explained, “There were some anxious moments of wondering if I was just throwing it all away, and why I was doing that. It’s taken years to understand what I intuitively was doing.”
Currently, the actress finds herself in a better state of mind. Reflecting on her breaks from acting, she emphasizes that it played a crucial role in empowering her and regaining a sense of control. She believes these breaks allowed her to approach her career from a different perspective, entering through a new doorway.

Similar to her commitment to mental well-being, McAdams prioritizes physical fitness. Currently, she maintains a height of 5 feet 4 inches (163 cm or 1.63 m) and weighs 54 kg (119 pounds).
Despite being 46 years old, the actress maintains an impressive figure through a combination of a healthy diet and regular exercise.
McAdams embraces a few key healthy habits to stay in shape. In an interview with TRAIN, she disclosed her preference for varying her day-to-day meals, expressing her enthusiasm for learning about and trying new foods.
She mentioned, “I like to learn about new things and try out new things. I’m finding it so much easier now to eat healthily on the go. I think there are a lot more tasty options.”
Similarly, McAdams emphasizes the importance of balance in her meals, ensuring that each includes protein and healthy fats. Additionally, she incorporates a substantial amount of vegetables into her daily diet.
