Floyd Mayweather Jr. is an American boxer with an estimated net worth of $400 million. Born on February 24, 1977 to Floyd Mayweather Sr. and his mother, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Jr. knew he would become a boxer long before he ever did. His dad was a famous boxer who took on the likes of famous boxers such as Sugar Ray Leonard, and his two uncles were also professional boxers. The gene is in his blood, and he was able to say at an early age this is what he would do with his life. He credits his grandmother for recognizing his potential as a young man, refusing to allow him to get a job so that he could continue to practice his boxing skills.
Though he had both a mother and a father, as well as a grandmother who loved him growing up, Floyd Mayweather did not have an easy childhood. His father was so busy practicing boxing that he never spent any time with his son. In fact, he had no idea his son lived with his mother in a one-bedroom house with five other people and would come home from school to find heroin needles in the yard and his mother and her friends passed out from their drug use. His father, on the other hand, claims that Floyd Mayweather Jr. would not be where he is in life if it were not for him.
Aside from being a professional boxer, his father was also a drug dealer. He ended up in jail and Mayweather went to live with his grandmother. He spent all his free time boxing, which kept him out of trouble and kept him doing what he needed to do for his own life. He was winning championships in the ring by the time he was only 16, but he had a long way to go, still. His father and his uncle taught him a number of defensive techniques that allowed Floyd Mayweather Jr. to avoid become scarred or hurt in many ways. He was, as a result, nicknamed, “Pretty Boy,” by the other boxers in the game.
Over the course of the past 25 years, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has become someone with an impressive career. He has managed to win more fights than just about anyone else in the game, and he became the highest paid athlete in the world in 2015 when he earned more than $300 million in one year. It was his Pay-Per-View fight with Manny Pacquiao that gave him this kind of earnings; paying him $285 million for one fight. He also has deals with companies such as Burger King and Hublot, as well as FanDuel, and those paid him another $15 million this year. That makes a total of $300 million in one year, when he’s earned around $420 million in his entire career and has a net worth of $400 million. Though he has said he is retiring from boxing, we think that fights like this that bring in that much money will actually cause Floyd Mayweather Jr. to rethink his retirement at times.
